Yesterday Goro gave me this challenge to paint. Here's my attempt.

  2. Niiice! Good job! I like how you feel more and more confident in using saturated colors. And you obviously starting to understand how to tread local color in different lighting setups. The white van definitely reads as a white even if you didn't use white. Good job on that. You are definitely on the right path.

Overall I think the image could be much darker since it's night time. That way you can emphasize the light from the buildings and the break lights of the van.

Be careful with reflections. I can't really tell what kind of material the ground is made of. If it's concrete it wouldn't reflect that much even if it's wet. It looks like a smooth shiny surface which would not make sense to me in a back alley. Again your contrast in the background buildings is too high so you let them pop forward. push them back a little.

Also when you turn the image into grayscale you will see that you have a lot of different contrast spots. Your eye jumps around and it's hard to decide where to look first. Try to simplify more and focus the lighting only on the important elements in the picture. If you turn my paintover into grayscale you will know what I mean.

    Here is the paintover

Great job though. This was not an easy task at all. If you want to carry it a step further, try to do this at daytime. One building is casting a shadow on the other and the van and the alley are still in shadow. It's going to be a lot harder than the night time one :D

P.S. Did you ever catch up again with the daily paintings?
If not you should definitely do the 4 you missed. Cause the more days
you miss the harder it'll be to keep going.
Whenever you miss days make sure to catch up again. That way you will be able to say that you never skipped a day and that'll put pressure on you and push you to keep going. You and Jonathan A. are as far as I know the only guys who kept painting since my lecture at SJSU. And you both are making huge progress. It's been only three months right? And look how far you guys came, and this is just the beginning!
    Keep going guys!

  3. Thanks for the great feed back Goro! I'm always so excited when you paint over my work. I hope you don't mind If i post a side by side update.

I somehow felt I'd let you down after reading your critique. I'm making the same mistakes I've been repeating for a while now, but its great to be reminded of them. I need to bring back reflections and highlights and over all contrast on all of my work.

I have not yet caught up on those 4 missed paintings and you bring up a good point. I want to be able to say I did a painting every day a year from now so it's great motivation to get those done asap. It's summer anyway, I have no excuse.

I'll take a shot at a daytime painting with a similar set up today. Should be fun, and challenging I'm sure.
