Back to SPEED painting

I wont be able to spend hours on paintings like I have been doing lately when school starts, so I'm gonna try to get back into paintings that take an hour or less. Heres 45 minutes of work.

Painted!

fixed some major proportion issues (I hope) and painted it!

I went with Goro's method of painting this time. It takes patience in the beginning when masking out every layer but it really pays off in the end. I was able to paint this much faster than the dragon girl.

Afternoon Reading and lots of life drawing

Ive been wanting to work on characters, anatomy and faces recently. This has made it so I put a lot of time into the line work of my daily paintings making the whole process take much longer. Hopefully it doesn't become a habit. either-way, I'll have to kick it when school starts and I have a lot less free time. Anyway, here's a sketch of tomorrows painting. I already like it much more than yesterdays.

And heres a bunch of what Ive been doing when not painting. What a productive summer :)

More Game of Thrones Fan Art

I figured out all the line work on this one and realized i had been noodeling around with it for 2 hours. This is hardly going to be a speed painting haha.

So here is the line work and some very loose values for tomorrows painting.

Once again I'm painting Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones... after some major changes happened since I'd painted her last time, I thought it was fitting for an update. (sorry if i spoiled anything ><)

Market Day

I'm a bit reluctant to post this painting. I feel like I'm making the same mistakes but I dont know what... Something just looks off. anyhow, It was alot of fun to paint. I dont even want to mention how long it took though. The line drawings always look so much less complicated!

food stop

 EDIT!:
Goro was kind enough to paint over this one. I'm making the same mistakes again aghh! Well, its just more of a reason to continue these daily paintings. Thanks Goro!

Another attempt at overcast/diffuse lighting.
~2 hours from imagination. I'm happy with this one

Green Hood

Since I started these daily paintings, I've been painting pretty loose on all of them. I did this one to see if what I'm learning holds up in a tighter painting.

Hermonie?

I began this painting wanting to do some Harry Potter Fan art. It took its own direction after a while.

Migration Take 2

Joe and Amy requested to polish up painting # 85 but didn't really want to paint over that scene again. since most of the learning behind it was complete (Light, composition, mood, temperature). So I painted a similar painting from scratch and spent about an hour more time then i usually would have for a speed painting.

About 2 hours, Photoshop from imagination

I was watching some videos from http://www.youtube.com/user/FZDSCHOOL#p/u/0/wy9MMdzbWcw while painting it though, so it may have had some influence on it.

Game Of Thrones Fan Art

Ive been watching HBO's Game of Thrones. It's one of most visually stunning television shows and the story is soo good, I had to do some fan art.

This is my depiction of Khal Drogo and his wife Daenerys Targaryen.

Khal Drogo is the leader of a forty thousand man army. Daenerys is forced to marry him, She is of royalty so the marriage creates a bond between the army and her royal family. Her son will play a very important roll as he will have the blood of both sides in him.

Painting # 81 PaintOver by Goro Fujita

Here's Goro's paint over of #81 from a few days ago. He really added the depth that wasn't reading in mine and it creates a much better painting over all. Thanks Goro! Ill keep everything you've showed me in mind and try to apply them in future paints.

White Cat

My cat looks like a big rat.

Anyway, back to basics. Ive spent to many of my paintings not really learning anything.. like yesterdays. I'm going to try to really understand whats going on with light in my paintings from now on. Thanks Jon and Goro, you helped me realize this.

Where the wild things wait for the bus.

I'm not sure why I painted this... I haven't seen the move and haven't read the book in many years. I like the character nonetheless.

More Like Slow Paints

Goro was right, the day lit ones are much harder. This took soo long, Something like 5 hours. But damn it was a good learning experience. I referenced all sorts of stuff from photography of Italy to just looking outside my window, fun! I'm happy with the results. Onwards and upwards!

Speed Painting # 78 Paint Over By Goro Fujita

Goro was kind enough to give a great critique and paint over of my van painting from 3 days ago. The difference is clear. I need to work on actual lighting in different set ups and really bring back the flashy highlights and reflections that only create  clutter in my paintings.

I'm going to take the next few days to paint imagined pieces with different lighting set ups and scenarios. I'll start with a similar composition to this painting but in daylight for today's painting and go from there.

Thank you Goro!

Moonlit Alley

Yesterday Goro gave me this challenge to paint. Here's my attempt.

Warm and Cool

I've been reading James Gurney's Light and Color and spent along time thumbing through Nathan Fowke's Blog so this painting was most likely influenced by both of them.

I'm trying to not use any blacks at all when darkening my paints but just cant get them as dark as I want. I wanted the forground plants to be darker to create higher contrast.
