SJSU Mid-Program Portfolio Review

Next week is the deadline for the portfolio review at school. This is a first pass at what I'm thinking I'll be submitting. Any comments and critiques would be appreciated.

 

#171 Richard Schmid Study

I was flipping through my copy of "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid and decided to do a study of one of his paintings. I'm really happy with how this came out. All my past attempts at portraits with wet media have always been terrible failures.

Learning from Inga and John have helped tremendously this semester. :)

Heres a graphite drapery study from life for my painting class. I tried to really work on edges with this one. I'm semi happy with the results.

Ani 12 Specimen Project

Here's my Specimen Project for Ani 12. the assignment was to take 2 items and combine them realistically. I chose a Hercules beetle and a strawberry.... But it just looks like a beetle. >_<

Btw, I hate reandering with graphite.

Figure Painting 4/6/12

I tried my first digital figure painting today. It was fun and i learned alot. The overall temperature is too warm now that i look at it again at home.

With midterms over, I thought I'd do a speed painting. but then i went into render mode and noodled around for a good 3 hours.

Ive been thumbnailing a lot of little imaginary perspective scenes for fun. I liked this one so i blew it up and quickly painted over it. I think the left side is out of the cone of vision and starting to look wonky.

About an hour and a half of work.

About an hour sketch. lots of laso tooling and air brushing.

My perspective class really helped me nail the initial sketch quickly.

I also went plein air painting with some friends at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Prisma Color Pencil

     My usual go to drawing tool for figures is a china marker but could not find one so I tried out a Prisma Color Pencil and instantly fell in love with it.

It's non-messy and dark like a china marker but still provides a nice value range like charcoal. And it flows like butter on smooth newsprint. :D Here's a 20 min pose using it.

Leapday sketches

Yesterday my perspective teacher gave a great demo and passed his personal sketchbook around the class. It was all very inspiring. I also picked up a great pen at the student store "Pilot G-Tec-C4" the international version of the fabled Hi-Tec-C pens. So I had to do a bit of sketching.
