#252
I was pretty disapointed in yesterdays painting. The overcast weather just did not look right to me, so today I tried again.
Things I learned:
- Overcast does =/= loss of contrast
- Saturation goes down instead
-Value range stays full (ofcourse) instead, range of temperature is limited to cools for the most part
I think today's was much more successful

Floating Tofu...
Original:
Edit!: After a suggestion from Goro to tweak a few saturation/hue adjustments this is what I came up with. I'd never really used these adjustments and I'm blown away at what they can do! Obviously I should not rely on these kinds of filters, but it gives me a good starting point to lay down more paint. Thank you Goro!

I'm behind on these! Here's another one for today, technically tomorrow but I haven't slept yet.
It's quite a bit different then my usual. But fun! Inspired heavily by Andrew Mar's amazing character design.

I think the values are working but the colors look muddy. The colors and textures are not consistent with the materials, its something I've always had problems with and want to improve on over this break. Ive spent too long on this piece though, Ive learned from it and need to move on.

I've been playing Diablo a bunch since break started so my friend Kristin suggest I try painting something that would fit in the Diablo universe. This is what I came up with! I don't think I quite hit the mark but it was fun and I think its a successful painting, diablo aside.
This is the first time I've ever worked in black and white and added color after and I feel like I was able to manage my values much better this way, also it was quite fast compared to other speedys. I think I'm going to keep experimenting with this technique.

Digital Color Pass
I had planed on this painting to be a semi refined color pass at my final acrylic illustration but I kind of zone out when I get into rendering mode. It turned out to be much more detailed then I had planned but i solved many problems that I'm not sure I could have figured out with Acrylic.
As you can see, I didn't stray to far from my first color comp. I got a ton of great feedback from my friends and an especially great crit from Goro too! Thanks everyone! Anyway, here it is! time to bust out he paint and brushes.

Color comps
Here's a few color comps. I'm not sure if Im really a fan of any of them yet. Though if I had to pick one I'd go with the top left one... the first one I did, of course!
I studied a lot of Nathan Fowkes and Bill Cone for these.

Forest Revision
Last Thursday I attended my first DLP critique. I was nervous and excited at the same time. but I learned so much. They gave me a great critique on my forest piece. I jotted some notes down and tried to fix as much as I can. Here are the results. I still have a ways to go but I think I'm almost ready to start laying in some color.

Sketchbookin
Bunny says draw animals and trees so damn it here are animals and trees!
Anyway, I no longer take the light rail to school and I'm finding it difficult to find things to draw in my sketchbook. I'm going to try to make these animal studies a regular thing. Hopefully a few times a week. This way I'll fill up my sketchbook and learn at the same time!

Henry Yan
I bought Henry Yan's Figure drawing book. And it came in today! Although it dosent really go through the construction, anatomy, and proportions of the body (I'd recomend Hampton for that), He does go over many little tips, techniques and tricks he uses to speed up the process.
Its a really good book with tons of examples and processes of his work. Check it out! http://www.parkablogs.com/category/tags/henry-yan
Here's a 20 min I tried from photo.

Oak Tree Studies 113b
Heres some studies of an old oak tree at Oak hill memorial park. It has so much character. I hated this assignment. Pencil rendering is super tedious. But I liked how it came out!

One Day - The Film
L Rossi, an animator I've been following here on blogger, along with a few other amazing artists completed this animated short, and its amazing.
The story and animation here is great, but its the backgrounds that really move me. They're incredibly inspiring. One Day, One Day...
