Fedora

Looks nothing like her but my goal was trying to find colors and push them further.

Fisherman's Wharf

Inspired by some of the example sketchbooks David Yee passed around in 112A today, I sketched and painted some pictures I took at Fisherman's Wharf this summer.

Creating stories for my sketches is fun. I think I'll do this for my paintings as well

A new approach

Yesterday I tried a new approach to painting using the lasso tool. The effect has its pros and cons. It allows me to be much more daring in composition and making huge changes without a second thought. It speeds the process up so much since I don't have to worry about edges and layers. Overall it just allows room for a lot more creativity. The problem is the final effect looks exactly how I'd expect it too, like a painting done in illustrator. Extremely hard edges regardless of how far back in the canvas an element is placed.

Today I used the same process for 90% of my painting and for the last 10 % i created a new layer and went in with a small texture brush to soften up edges where I felt necessary. I'm quite happy with the end result.

By the way, here's a painting from 93 days ago. Both were done from imagination. Today's was done in about 40 minutes and the bottom one was done in several hours. I remember being so frustrated while painting it. I've learned so much more than I thought I would in just 93 paintings. But enough with the self back patting. Cant wait to experiment more with this process!

Snow and Lava

I accidentally stumbled on new way of painting. This was largely painted with the lasso tool and and large soft brush. I'm feeling very wary of using this method though. Not sure if I should. It saves a load of time to create quick clean edges but it feels like cheating in a way... But it was loads of fun and really pressure free to work this way. I think I'll experiment with it more but wont let it become a crutch.

Anyway.. Maciej Kuciara uses this method some times to create almost photo realistic paintings. Check out his blog: http://maciejkuciara.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-05-13T19%3A35%3A00%2B02%3A00

Cape Cod

I feel I have made a break through of sorts with this painting. It has a bit of that painterly feel I've admired of plein air painters and have been striving for.

And also I'm feeling I'm really building speed with these observational paintings. This one took about 45 minutes, Something I would not have come close to 110 days ago.

Catching Up

 Here are speed paintings # 108 & 109

With school coming up I need to be able to fit speed paintings into my schedule so I did these to give my self more of a time constraint.

Focusing on stroke efficiency and really understanding what light is doing. Genarally just trying to paint in PS like I would with traditional paint. Both around 20 mins
